Saphire's Ever-Appearing YJssi

Saphire is a Chinese BYJ fan. A former baidu BYJ Forum lead, she retired recently and keep posting her writings there. I found her articles deep and witty, but hard to translate into English. At least hard for me, with little muster of the language. Hopefully reader who understands Chinese can appreciate her humor.

  走路的时候,想一想勇俊先生;
  吃饭的时候,想一想勇俊先生;
  看书的时候,想一想勇俊先生;

thanks h for bringing this to us.

I feel so ashamed that I really am not knowledgeable enough to appreciate what is a good piece of Chinese writing and what's not. I have quite a hard time reading simplified Chinese. Even after I figure out each word, sometimes I still can't understand what the sentence means (and I get discouraged).

I will take your word for it and re-read it bearing "deep and witty" in mind. Maybe I'll get it this time.

BTW, so many times I thought about venturing into the Chinese websites (especially after Quilt is down), but still do not have the courage to do it. I'm sure it's a gem in that side of the BYJ world. Sigh!

Jaime dear, I don't know how to translate it into traditional Chinese. I don't dare to translate it into English. I can only try to give a summary in my own word, let me try later. My brain is not working now. Don't feel discouraged and ashamed, I feel bad for my incapable of making it easier. Maybe the meaning of this piece is not that deep - about not seeing YJ for these days and thinking about him everywhere every occassion, etc. the author's Chinese knowledge is deeeep, and her thoughts sharp. Her style amusing.

loveyongjoon.com has lots of treasures, there is another Chinese site onlybyj.com. I sometimes browse baidu.com BYJ Forum, I like Saphire's Chinese writings. Reading Chinese is easier to me than English. But for both languages, I take it as an opportunity to learn, it is rare to see the nicely written articles with various styles, on the topic of our interest, coming up so frequently, almost daily. Now we get it, let's enjoy!

dear h,

yes, I take this as a valuable opportunity for me to practise Chinese. Especially when bb or you have both versions posted. I would read and match and verify the sentences I'm not sure about, then I'll know better next time. I have to thank you and bb for posting these good articles for me to enjoy.

Please do not feel pressure to translate anything for me (i'd really feel embarassed if you work so hard). Only when you find yourself wanting to do it. I enjoy anything you ladies write.

Just curious, do the Chinese websites allow user adding English comment?

take care!

Sorry byjglobal, I am feeling incapable. When can I get a chance to translate it? and even if I translate it, I will never be able to convey the original sense of the author. I got to try but give me some time.

Hi Jaime, I think you can add comment with English in the Chinese forum, but expect half of the folks not underdanding it. Just like I post the Chinese writings here, but only expect a few people will benifit from it, well, mostly I post it for myself to enjoy it. But I'll make an attemp to translate it. Just for fun. Jeez, now I got to appreciate how much work bb has put in for all these translations.

jaime,
actually there're some fans who would post english comments in reply to others' postings on the chinese byj sites.

i think it's partly because some of the chinese fans live in the western hemisphere and haven't yet figured out how to input chinese characters :)

if you ask me, some reply is better than no reply, so please... reply away...

and hee... H, yea, it's actually not that easy translating chinese stuff into english. no, not trying to claim credit or whatsoever, am just trying to highlight the differences in the languages make it so hard. sometimes two chinese words can speak volumes, but i find myself needing one or sometimes even two whole sentences just to say the same bloody thing in english :p

and... i'm sure your command of both languages must be good. after all, chinese is your mother tongue, and i already know your grasp of the english language is more than just good :)

Hi bb,

thanks for your encouragement, i am still crawling on translating Mrs A's article. I think the world will end faster than my translation. I do painfully enjoy it, enjoy it from its content, writing it into Chinese just like writing my own thoughts for myself, but painful that every little sentence is so difficult for expressing Mrs A's thoughts in a different language. But I think the time is worth spending, I learned so much. right, one thing I learned was, I am better at reading than writing, or how is this, it is easier reading than writing. so I solute to all you blogging and commenting girls and boys for writing out loud your thoughts, it's a simple way of supporting each other.

Jaime, don't take me as discouraging you, whenever you want to comment, though at Chinese sites, just do it, there are people who will appreciate it, especially your joyful witty tickling ways ...
